Edith Mae 'Edie' Copeland, 90, Hays, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013, at Good Samaritan Society, Hays. She was born Oct. 16, 1923, in Triig County, Ky., to James A. and Eddie (Calhoun) Shearer. She married Joseph B. Copeland on Jan. 9, 1945, in Clay Center.

She worked as a telephone operator in St. Louis during World War II. She was a homemaker, and worked at Federal Land Bank in Hays for several years. She was co-owner with her husband of the Blue Banner Christian Bookstore as a ministry to the community, as well as college and international students.

She was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian church in Quinter and attended North Oak Community Church in Hays. She had a life passion and warm way to encourage and share the gospel news with many she met. As one friend stated, 'She was a soldier for Jesus.'

Survivors include her husband, Hays; two sons, J. Wayne Copeland, Leawood, and Paul Copeland and wife, Marilyn, Charlevoix, Mich.; a daughter, Debbie Timken and husband, Gary, Hays; a sister, Clara Bell Johnson, Metropolis, Ind.; nine grandchildren, Shannon Myers, Katie Copeland, Griffin Copeland, Matthew Copeland, Steven Copeland, Stacie Cummings, Matthew Timken, Christopher Timken and Tiffany Hamblin; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Robert Shearer; two sisters, Helen Maxwell and Dottie Cline; a son-in-law, James Bruce, and a daughter-in-law, Dedra Copeland.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at North Oak Community Church, Hays; burial in Mount Allen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601, and from 9 a.m. until time of service Wednesday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to North Oak Community Church or the Good Samaritan Society, Hays, in care of the funeral home.
