Virginia Herzog

Virginia E. Herzog, age 90, of Hays, passed away on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at her home. She was born on January 8, 1920 Arlington Heights, Illinois to Arthur and Pauline (Gore) McElhose. She married Ralph H. Herzog on January 28, 1945 in Salina, Kansas.At the age of 9 months old, Virginia was chosen, out of 10,000 babies, the winner of the Chicago Herald/Examiner Perfect Baby Contest. She attended grade school and high school in Arlington Heights, Ill, graduating in 1938. After attending business school in Chicago she worked at Culligan Water where she met the love of her life, Ralph Herzog. They were married in Salina, KS on Jan 28, 1945. Later they moved to Hays, KS, where they raised their family of 7 children. Virginia worked with Ralph in his physiotherapy practice. Virginia was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a Sunday School Teacher and a Sunday School Superintendent for many years. As the children became older she became active in Girl Scouts as a leader, for 10 years. As a member of the Sunflower Girl Scout Council she was elected Program Coordinator. In 1974, Virginia ran for Registrar of Deeds in Ellis County. She was the first woman to be elected to an Ellis County office and held the position for 11 years. She worked hard encouraging women to run for other county offices. After her retirement she remained active in her church activities making quilt tops from scrap material donated to the church and together with the ladies, tied the quilts and sent them to Lutheran missions. She made banners to decorate the church and banners for each child that was confirmed and baptism cloths for the babies. She was an avid follower of the Sport Compact car races in which their son, Art, raced. Christ was her Lord and Savior and she did her best to be like Him.She is survived by her husband of 65 years Ralph Herzog of Hays. Her children and spouses, Maxine & Larry Litson, Gove, KS; Judy & Roy Rego, Sun City, AZ; Sharon Naylor, Oklahoma City, OK; Mack & Sue Herzog, Reno, NV; James & Karen Herzog, Peoria, AZ; Robert & Connie Herzog, Peoria, AZ; Arthur & Becky Herzog, Hays, KS. 18 Grandchildren, 20 Gr. Grandchildren and 1 Gr.Great GrandchildShe was preceded in death by her parents and brother and sister. Services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, July 30th at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hays. Inurnment will be in Mt. Allen Cemetery. The family will be present at the church on Friday from 9:30 A.M. until service time to greet friends. Arrangements in care of Brock's North Hill Chapel 2509 Vine, Hays.Memorials are suggested to Hospice at Hays Medical Center or Trinity Lutheran Church.
