Tom Harvey

Tom L. Harvey, 83, Hays, died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, in Hays. He was born Jan. 17, 1926, in Ulysses to Ray and Olive (Larkin) Harvey and was raised by Fred and Gladys Pickering and Mary Harvey, his paternal grandmother. He graduated from Ulysses High School in 1943. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Kansas State University and a Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University in 1963. He married Joan Schroeder on June 7, 1952, in Yuma, Ariz. He was a research entomologist at the Kansas State Agricultural Research Center in Hays from 1954 to 2007. He was a professor emeritus at Kansas State University. He was a World War II veteran, serving as a rifleman in the Philippines during the Leyte and Luzon campaigns. He served in the Naval Reserves from 1952 to 1986, retiring with the rank of captain. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays. Survivors include his wife, of the home; five sons, Fred and wife, Sheri, Reno, Nev., Mark and wife, Lise, Burke, Va., Stephen and wife, Karen, Forrest, Va., Paul and wife, Toni, Longwood, Fla., and James and wife, Sarita, Corpus Christi, Texas; two daughters, Marilyn Schumacher and husband, Robert, Hays, and Barbara Schnose and husband, Mark, Fontana, Calif.; two sisters, Janet McGinnis, Lee's Summit, Mo., and Janis Faulkner, Miami; 26 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jake Harvey; a brother, Wayne Harvey; and two sisters, Verla Rae Harvey and Mary Anna Pichotta. Services and burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays. An adorers rosary will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. A parish wake will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Kansas Right to Life or Immaculate Heart of Mary Church building fund in care of the funeral home.
