Robert H. Brown, 71, Athens, OH, died Thursday, July 2, 2009. He was born in October 1937 in Kansas City, MO, to Harold and Wenonah Brown. He graduated from John R. Buchtel High School, Akron, OH, in 1955. He received a bachelor's degree in music education from Oberlin Conservatory in 1959 and a double master's degree in music education and bassoon performance from the University of Illinois. He was an associate professor of music at Fort Hays State University from 1963 to 2001. He taught woodwinds, small wind ensembles and music classes for non-majors. He served as director of High Plains Band Camp for 12 years. He was a member of the National Flute Association, Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Mu Alpha Symphonia and FHSU's Faculty Senate. His hobbies included woodworking, needlepoint, model railroading and traveling with his family. He also was well-known in Hays for his construction of very elaborate doll houses. Survivors include a son, David, and his wife, Teresa, Derby, KS; a daughter, Alison Brown Sincoff, and her husband, David, Athens, OH; a son, Steven, and his wife, Abigail, Nashville, TN; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Blumenthal, San Jose, CA.; a nephew, Keith Blumenthal, San Jose, CA; a niece, Diane Villegas, Chino Hills, CA; and three grandchildren, Cameron and Haley Brown and Noah Sincoff. His wife, E. Jane Deakyne Brown, preceded him in death. A memorial service honoring the life of Mr. Brown will be held on Tuesday, December 22, 2009, at 11:00am. in the Robbins Alumni Center at FHSU. The family asks that RSVPs for the service be directed to David Brown (316) 789-8232 on or before December 15th.
