Richard Ralph Schmidt, age 88, died Thursday, April 01, 2010 at St John's Rest Home Hays. Richard was born May 4, 1921 near Schoenchen, Ks. to Adolph and Anna (Denk) Schmidt. He married Mabel Marie Werth June 16, 1942 in Antonino, Kansas.Richard was a lifelong farmer and politician. For all his adult life he and Mabel lived and farmed 1.5 miles east of Antonino, Ks. Richard served in many public offices most notably as County Clerk and County Treasurer along with 10 years as the State Representative from the 111th district, which includes the southernmost part of Hays as well as southern rural Ellis County. Richard also served on many local boards. He was a member of Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Antonino and the Schoenchen Knights of Columbus. He was most proud of being a loving husband, father, and grandfather who attended many family sporting events.Richard is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mabel of the home and nine sons and daughters. Those are JoAnn (Don) Wilcox of Salina; Gary (Kathy) Schmidt of Topeka; Elaine (Dennis) Allen of Scott City; Charles (Alexia) Schmidt of Hays; Richard (Vicki) Schmidt of Mulvane; Karen Schmidt of Hays; Dan (Joan) Schmidt of Hoisington; Mark (Becky) Schmidt of Colwich; Cecil (Eileen) Schmidt of Topeka; a sister, Josephine (Josy) of Denver, Co. along with 29 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. A sister, Helen Pfannenstiel and three brothers, John, Nick and Leonard, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, April 5th at Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Antonino, Ks. Burial will be in St Anthony's Cemetery Schoenchen, Ks.Visitation will be Sunday 5:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at Brock's North Hill Chapel 2509 Vine, Hays. Visitation on Monday will be from 9:00 A.M. until service time at the church. A family led rosary service will be at 6:00 P.M. Sunday followed by a parish vigil service at 6:30 P.M. all at the funeral home.Memorial contributions are suggested to Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Antonino.
