Phillip J. Flax, age 86 of Ellis, died Wednesday, May 13th, 2009 at Hays Medical Center. He was born June 9, 1922 in Ransom, Kansas to Albert and Elizabeth (Aschenbrenner) Flax. He married Anna Schuster on September 20, 1948 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis.Phillip was a retired Farmer and Stockman and had worked in the oil fields as a Pumper. He was a WWII veteran serving in the US Army. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus and VFW all of Ellis. He is survived by his wife, Anna of Ellis, four daughters, Phyllis Knoll and husband Fred of Hays, Charlotte Pfeifer and husband Eldon, Ruth Bollig and husband Richard and Millie Haas and husband Gary all of Ellis, four brothers, Clarence Flax and wife Marilyn of Dodge City, Alfred Flax and wife Verna of Wakeeney, Lawrence Flax and wife Pearl of Salina and Albert Flax Jr. and wife Shirley of Ellis, five sisters, Elizabeth Lang and Teresa Gnad both of Hays, Anna Pfeifer of WaKeeney, Agnes Burns and Freda Dietz both of Ellis, eleven grandchildren, Shawn and Grady Knoll, Sheldon, Jason and Brandon Pfeifer, Janelle Mongeau, Preston and Alyson Bollig, Daniel, Daren and Dylan Haas. He is also survived by 13 great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Joe, William, Tony and infant brother John and a sister, Rosie Burns. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:00 A.M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Ellis. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery with Military Honors by the Ellis VFW.Visitation will be on Friday 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis and on Saturday 9:00 A.M. - 9:30 A.M at Keithley Funeral Chapel, 400 E. 17th, Ellis.A parish vigil service will be at 7:00 P.M. followed by a 3rd degree Knights of Columbus rosary all at the church on Friday.Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Mary's School.
