Paula Huser, 59, Hays, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center Oncology Unit, Omaha, Neb.She was born July 13, 1951 to Fred J. and Evelyn (Jacobs) Huser in Hays and was a 1969 graduate of Marian High School. She earned her B.M. degree from Fort Hays State University in 1973 and her Master's in music degree in 1980. She spent several years teaching in Junction City and, in 1985, returned to Hays to work on an undergraduate degree in art, which she received in 1987.In 1989, she started her local teaching career at both St. Joseph's Grade School and St. Mary's Grade School in Ellis teaching music. Thus began a twenty-plus year career influencing area youngsters to include private piano lessons. In 1994, she accepted a position at Holy Family and, in addition to music, began the school's first art program. In 2005, she was named Outstanding Elementary Music Educator for the Northwest KMEA District.Music ministry was the focal point of her entire career. She served as the director of St. Joseph Parish Choir from 1993-2003. She was sought after as a cantor and played for many local churches and, most recently, was a member and music minister for Our Lady Help of Christians Parish in Antonino.She played French horn with a FHSU Community Orchestra and was a member of the Hays Arts Council, Hays Beautification Commission, Kansas Music Educators Association, Antonino Christian Mothers, Associates of the Sisters of Saint Agnes and numerous national pastoral music and education associations. She was also a Board Member/Director of the Heartland Community Theater and director of the Holy Family Joyful Noise Singers. Paula is predeceased by her parents and one nephew. She is survived by her brother and sisters: Fred (Rhonda), Fort Collins, CO; Marie (Bill) Wasinger, Hays; Barbara (James) Spaccamonti, Pueblo, CO; and Bernard (Marilyn), Broken Arrow, OK; seven nephews and five nieces, six great nephews and five great nieces.Services will be held at 10 am on Saturday, October 9th at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with internment following the service at St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Friday and from 8:30 to 9:30 am on Saturday all at Brock's North Hill Chapel ~ 2509 Vine ~ Hays, KS. 67601.Friday the Associates of the Sisters of Saint Agnes will have a rosary service at 4:30, Antonino Christian Mothers rosary service at 5:30, Holy Family Faculty rosary service at 6:30 followed by a parish wake service at 7:00 P.M. all at the funeral home.Memorials are suggested to Holy Family Elementary, Heartland Community Theater and Cancer Council of Ellis County.
