Paul Unrein

Paul A. Unrein, age 86, of Hays, Passed away Thursday, February 18th at the Hays Medical Center. He was born on June 4, 1923 to Peter and Katherine (Hertel) Unrein on the family farm in Rush County, Kansas. He married Irene Herrman on November 12, 1946 in Liebenthal, Kansas. Paul was a US Army veteran serving during WWII. His service detail included Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was a farmer and retired John Deere Mechanic working for Rupps Incorporated of Hays for 27 years. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Schoenchen Knights of Columbus, Hays VFW and the American Legion.He is survived by his wife Irene of 63 years; four sons, Ron Unrein and wife Judy of Hays, Arlyn Unrein and wife JoAnn of Russell, Glenn Unrein and wife Holly of Hays and Curtis Unrein and wife Diane of Victoria; five daughters, Sheila Marcotte and husband Bill of Salina, Kathy Peterson and husband Vernon of Hays, Becky Martin and husband Philip of Larned, Melinda Fross and husband Tom of Hays and Kristie Baker of Colorado; three half brothers, Frank Unrein of Gorham, Clem Unrein and Larry Unrein of Hays; a sister, Jenny Holzmeister of Oakley; a half sister, Josie Quint of Grinnell; 22 grandchildren, Steven, Chris, Ken, Jackie, Dan, Donna, Wayne, Kevin, Kendra, Eric, Jill, Brian, Andy, Angie, Joe, Jayson, Derrick, Michael, Darren, Kelly, Kelton and Logan; 17 great grandchildren and a great-great grandchild.He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Wesley, a great grandson, Kaden, eight brothers, Jake, Carl, Ben, Tony, Henry, John, Celly, and Alvin, a half brother, Joe and three sisters, Emma, Mary and Barb.Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hays. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery with military honors by the Hays VFW and American Legion.Visitation will be Friday 4:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. and Saturday 9:30 A.M. - 10:30 A.M. all at Brock's North Hill Chapel Funeral Home 2509 Vine, Hays.A parish vigil service will be Friday at 6:00 P.M. followed by a Schoenchen Knights of Columbus rosary.Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice or to a fund determined by the family at a later date.
