Merle Edward Evans, age 73, of Ellis died Sunday, April 5, 2009 at home in Ellis. Mr. Evans was born April 1, 1936 in Haviland, KS. to Budd and Nora (Linton) Evans. Merle graduated from Haviland High School. He served in the US Army from June 22, 1954 to August 31, 1974. He married Violet Blair on July 29, 1984. He was the recipient of numerous commendations during his military carrier. After his retirement from the service he worked at Roy's Sales and Service in Norton and worked in the oilfields. He is survived by his wife: Violet (Blair) Evans; one sister: Esther Roberts of Cyril, OK and one brother: Arnold Evans of NM; three sisters-in-law, Bea Evans of Bucklin, KS, Charlotte Lyon of Smith Center, KS. and Velma Fenton of Grand Island, NEB. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Budd and Nora Evans, four brothers, Homer, Ralph, Roy and Floyd Evans and a sister, Margaret Patee. The funeral will be held 1:30 pm on Thursday, April 9 at Keithley Funeral Chapel, 400 E. 17th Street, Ellis, KS. Burial will be in WaKeeney Veterans Cemetery, WaKeeney on Thursday, April 9 at 2:30 pm. Calling hours will be Wednesday, April 8 from 4:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M. and Thursday, April 9 from 12:30 P.M. - 1:30 P.M. at Keithley Funeral Chapel, 400 E. 17th Street, Ellis. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Merle and Violet Evans Scholarship Fund at Fort Hays State University.
