Maynard "Doc" Smith

Maynard Dexter "Doc" Smith, 83, Hays, died Thursday, November 19th at the Hays Good Samaritan Center. He was born on May 17, 1926 in Mankato, Kansas to Milo Monte and Cleo (Coyler) Smith. He graduated from Salina High School class of 1944 in Salina, Kansas. He married Barbara Elder on May 17, 1966 in Albion, Illinois.Maynard worked in sales for Singer sewing machines, construction work and followed his father's talent as a piano tuner throughout Central and Western Kansas for 20 years. He regularly wrote political concerns for the opinion page of the Hays Daily News. He was an avid gardener and loved to spend time with "Lucky" his cat.He is survived by his wife, Barbara of the home; three sons, Monte Smith and wife Angel of Hays, Matthew Smith of Hays and Ty Smith and wife Jane of Oklahoma; a daughter, Beccy Robertson and husband John of Washington; two sisters, Donna Lee Smith and Elaine Smith of California; 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, November 23rd at North Oak Community Church in Hays.Visitation will be on Sunday 5:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays and on Monday 12:00 - service time at the church.Memorial contributions are suggested to the Maynard Smith Memorial Fund with the designation to be determined at a later date and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
