Matthew Thomas “Matt” Hull, age 36, of Hays, Kansas, died Monday, August 17, 2026, at his home in Hays.
Matt was born July 17, 1990, in Scottsdale, Arizona, to Samuel L. Hull Jr. and Judy (Georges) Hull. His mother preceded him in death in 2017.
Although Matt lived in California for only a few years before his family moved to Kansas, his time there left a lasting impression on him. His loyalty to California sports teams never wavered, and he remained an avid fan of the Los Angeles Kings, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Los Angeles Lakers.
Matt was a 2008 graduate of Hays High School. He continued his education at Kansas State University and later earned his bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State University in Hays. He was currently employed at A-1 Scaffold Manufacturing, where he put his skills to work as a member of the powder coat team.
Those who knew Matt will especially remember his dry sense of humor and quick wit. He had a unique ability to carry on a conversation almost entirely through obscure movie quotes, often drawing from one of his favorites, The Big Lebowski. His humor, personality, and the laughter he brought to those around him will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Music was also an important part of Matt’s life. He was jokingly described as an “equal-opportunity listener,” with playlists spanning nearly every genre imaginable. Whether a song was familiar or something completely unexpected, there was a good chance Matt had listened to it and found something to appreciate.
The mountains were Matt’s getaway and a place where he truly enjoyed himself. He loved snowboarding and was always willing to share his knowledge and experience with others who were learning the sport. He took great satisfaction in helping someone pick it up, patiently teaching them and sharing something he genuinely loved.
Survivors include his father, Sam Hull; his sister, Sarah (Dixon) Allenbaugh; his uncle, Tom (Kris) Roudebush; and several nieces, nephews, and close friends.
A Celebration of Matt’s Life will be held at a later date. Memorials are suggested to Valley Hope and may be made in care of the funeral chapel.
Cremation is under the direction of Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory – Brock’s Chapel, 2509 Vine Street, Hays, Kansas 67601.
