Lucy Mildred (Schippers) Baier, age 85, of Hays passed away Thursday, February 3, 2022, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas. She was born February 20, 1936, in Victoria, Kansas, to John M. and Anna C. (Kippes) Schippers. She attended Victoria Grade School and was a 1954 graduate of Victoria High School.

She married Paul J. Baier on November 6, 1954, in Victoria. After 60 years of marriage, he preceded her in death September 19, 2015.

During the early years of their marriage, they lived in Russell where she worked for United Telephone Company. They later moved to the Baier family farm at Vincent in 1972. She helped her husband with all the farm chores including milking the cows, raising chickens, gardening, and harvesting. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Vincent, for 36 years where she belonged to Christian Mothers, took care of the church, and was a sacristan for over 7 years before moving to Hays in 2008.

While in Hays, she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and served on the Parish Council. She was a Eucharistic Minister, lector, and served the homebound. She was a member of Victoria Daughters of Isabella and Victoria V.F.W. Auxiliary . She served on Hays Medical Centers Auxiliary and the Ellis County Election Board at Pfeifer, Victoria, and Hays. She enjoyed playing pinochle, bingo, and especially trips to the casinos.

Survivors include her four daughters, Susan Legleiter and husband, Ron; and Jane Schumacher and husband, Brian, all of Hays, KS; Mary Pfeifer and husband, Steve, of Victoria, KS; and Betty Johnson and husband, Marty, of Goodyear, AZ: one brother, Paul Schippers of Victoria, KS; two sisters, Sister Mary Ann Schippers of Fond du Lac, WI; and Lillian Leiker of Hays, KS; three sisters-in-law, Armella Schippers of Olathe, KS; Joann Schippers of Springfield, MO; and Mariette Leis, of Wichita, KS; 12 grandchildren, Jason Pfeifer; Stephanie Harris and husband, Mike; Jill Pfannenstiel and husband, Clint; Christina Cline; Dustin Schumacher and wife, Becky; Jennifer Pfeifer; Derek Schumacher and wife, Vanessa; Jared Pfeifer and wife, Morgan; Kayla Johnson and husband, Joel; Blake Merritt and wife, Katelyn; Dylan Schumacher and fianc, Danielle Lickteig; Nathan Merritt and girlfriend, Abbie Kint; four step-grandchildren, Renee Legleiter; Brent Legleiter; Amy Hellerich and husband, Jeff; and Amber Bronson and husband, Travis; 21 great-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter Amy Renee, her six brothers, Herman, George, John, Lawrence, Arthur, and Norman Schippers; and one sister, Estella Kuhn.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas with Father Richard Daise officiating. Burial will be in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas.

A vigil service with a Victoria V.F.W. Auxiliary memorial service and a Victoria Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6:30 P.M. Monday, at Clines-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:30 P.M. Monday, at Clines-Keithley Mortuary of Hays and from 9:00 to 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria.

The family suggests memorials to TMP-Marian High School, Hays, or St. Fidelis Cemetery.
