K. Mary Rose Bieker Schmidt Mertens, 79, Hays, died Thursday, July 16, 2009, at her home after an eight month courageous battle with cancer.She was born Feb. 23, 1930, in Emmeram, to Philip and Anna Mary (Denning) Bieker.She married Ralph J. Schmidt on April 9, 1947. He preceded her in death March 5, 1980. She later married Charles C. Mertens on Oct. 13, 1984. He preceded her in death Nov. 21, 2003.Survivors include two sons, Joe Alan Schmidt and wife, Joyce, and Damian Schmidt, all of Manhattan; eight daughters, Annette Schaffer and husband, Larry, Simone Korbe and husband, Butch, Mona Lee Chapman and husband, Timothy, all of Hays. Rae Ann McCoy and husband, Steve, Topeka, T. Mary Rose Eakes and husband, Kevin, St. Mary's, LaDona Montgomery and husband, Brent, Bennington, Andre' Spence and husband, Darin, Las Cruces, N.M. and Colette Augustine and husband, Clair, Bucyrus; three brothers, Eddie Bieker, Wheaton, Ill., Linus Bieker, Oklahoma City and Eldon Bieker, Edmond, Okla.; a sister, Lucille Giebler, Clifton, Colo.; 36 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by a son, Mark Schmidt; two brothers, Daniel and Louis Bieker; and three sisters, Mrs. Joe (Evelyn) Weigel, Sister M. Edwina Bieker and Mrs. Charles (Caroline) Baker.Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John Mary Vianney Latin Community Church, Maple Hill; burial at 4 p.m. Monday in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Hays.Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Brock's North Hill Chapel, Hays.A vigil will be at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.Memorials are suggested to Traditional Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in the Tridentine Latin Rite in care of Catholic Rectory Pastor F.S.S.P., 14631 Waterman Crossing Rd., Maple Hill, KS 66507.
