James R. Gustin

James R. "Jim" Gustin, age 91, of Hays, passed away Wednesday, November 24th at Hays Medical Center following a short illness. He was born on July 17, 1919 in Ashland, Nebraska to Joseph and Anna (Thiel) Gustin. He grew up on the family farm in Murdock, Nebraska. He married Magdalene "Madge" Grosdidier on November 4, 1941 in Eudora, Kansas at Holy Family Catholic Church.Jim attended the University of Nebraska and graduated from the Williams Institute of Mortuary Science in Kansas City, Missouri. He worked for funeral homes in Kansas City, Missouri, Mound City, Kansas and Plattsburg, Missouri before moving to Hays, Kansas in 1952. He worked for Morford's Mortuary until 1957 at which time he purchased Brock's Funeral Home along with S.J. Applehans. Jim retired from Brock's North Hill Chapel in 1987. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Navy and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays.Jim is survived by his wife of 69 years, Madge Gustin of Hays; two sons, Jerry and wife Karen (Schueler) Gustin of Gloucester, VA. and Tim and wife Leigh (Ackarman) Gustin of Houston, TX; 6 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great- great grandchild.He was preceded in death by his parents.Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, November 27th at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Military Honors by the Hays VFW following services at the church. Interment will be at 1:00 P.M. Monday, November 29th in Eudora, Kansas.Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM Friday and from 8:45AM to 9:30 AM on Saturday all at Brock's North Hill Chapel ~ 2509 Vine ~ Hays, KS. 67601. A parish vigil service will be at 6:00 PM Friday at the funeral home.Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Catholic Church and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
