James Edward Hubbard, known to many as Jim, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2024, at the age of 75. He was born on April 21, 1949, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Patricia Louise Hubbard Stephens (Chance) and Herald Hubbard. Jim was raised by his mother and stepfather, Robert "Bob" Stephens, who played a significant role in his upbringing.
Jim graduated from Hill City High School in 1967 and soon after joined the Army, serving his country with dedication during the Vietnam War for four years. In his younger years, Jim embraced life’s adventures, from surfing and fishing to riding his motorcycle around Maui.
For many years, Jim was the manager of The Buff and The Oasis car washes in Hays and Great Bend. He took great pride in his work, always ensuring cars were washed the right way—and if not, he’d be there to help or do it himself.
After retiring, Jim found joy in listening to music, watching TV, and catching the latest sci-fi movies. He was also a devoted animal lover, and his "well-loved, not spoiled" pets were always close by, bringing him happiness.
Jim had a quick wit and an even quicker heart, always ready with a joke or a comforting shoulder for anyone in need. He would help others without hesitation or judgment. His Native American heritage and his faith in God were central to who he was, providing strength and guidance throughout his life.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Heather Griffith, his nephew Rick Hubbard, his grandparents Edward and Virginia Chance of Saint John, Kansas, as well as his parents and stepfather.
He is survived by his brother, Richard "Pete" Eugene Hubbard of Wichita, KS, as well as countless friends and many people he considered his "extra daughters and grandkids."
A Celebration of Life will be held on what would have been Jim’s next birthday, April 21, 2025, to give all who knew and loved him ample time to plan and attend. Jim was cremated, and a private inurnment will take place at a later date.
