James E, Flinn Jr.

James E. "Jim" Flinn Jr., age 81 of Ellis, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Hays Medical Center. He was born November 16, 1928 in Dodge City, Kansas to James E. and Viola (Edwards) Flinn Sr. He graduated from Ness City High School in 1948 and attended Fort Hays State. He married Opal Hamburg on October 21, 1949 in Hays.Jim worked for the Kansas Fire inspection Bureau in Hays, Butler furniture Store in Hays, Owned and operated Juco Hi Grill in Dodge City in 1954 - 1959,. In 1960 his family moved North of Ellis to farm. He operated a Dairy farm for 33 years and had a cow calf herd. He also drove a bus for the Ellis School District #388 for 13years. He started the Ellis Sunflower 4-H club and served as club leader, Kansas State Fair Encampment Manager for 44 years, Member of the Hays Masonic Lodge #195, Eastern Star Hays Chapter # 228, AARP Ellis Chapter # 1403, WaKeeney Eagles AERIE # 3774, Master Farmer/Master Farm Homemaker class of 1999, St. John Lutheran Church of Ellis, Regular contributor to the Generations Page with the Hays Daily News, Shooting Stars Square Dance Club, Sternberg Museum of Natural History, Sunflower Ramblers Camping Club, past Ellis County Fair Board Member. He also received the Conservation Wind Break Award, Kansas Century Farm Award from Kansas Farm Bureau and he was inducted to the Kansas Fairs and Festivals Hall of Fame.Jim is survived by his wife, Opal of the home, three sons, Stewart and wife OSun of Hutchinson, Steven and wife Brenda of Overland Park and Stanley and wife, McKenzie of Hays, two daughters, Sheila Honeyman and husband Marvin of Oakley and Shirleen Augustine and husband Ray of Hutchinson, 17 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and two brothers, David of Aurora, MO. and Arnold of Colby, KS.He was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter, Nancy Jean and a brother, Clifford.Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. Friday, May 28th at St. John Lutheran Church, 7 miles north of Ellis. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Ellis.Visitation will be Thursday, 4:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at Keithley Funeral Chapel 400 E. 17th, Ellis. Friday visitation will be 11:30 A.M. - service time at the church with a luncheon at noon.Contributions are suggested to St. John Lutheran Church, Hays Medical Center Auxiliary or to be used according to the wishes of the family.
