Irvin "Irv" Karlin of Hays passed away peacefully on April 7, 2009, after fighting a courageous battle against brain cancer. He was born September 20, 1924, to Edmund and Matilda (Dinges) Karlin. Irv graduated from St. Joseph's Military Academy in 1942, and attended St. Joseph's College. He married Marie Hartman on February 22, 1944. They recently celebrated 65 years of marriage. Irv served his country as a captain in the United States Army fighting in the European Theater. Upon his return from the war, he was one of the cofounders of Prudential Loan and Investment, Centennial Lanes, and Midwest Adjusters. He was appointed by Governor Robert Docking to the Kansas Council of Advisors on Consumer Credit and served on this committee from 1974-1976. Irv gave fifteen years of service to the City of Hays Zoning Board and Board of Zoning Appeals. He was a founding committee member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish and was an active supporter of St. Joseph's Military Academy and Thomas More Prep-Marian where he served in various volunteer capacities over many years. Irv received the Points of Light award from TMP-Marian in 1997, and he and his wife, Marie, received the Outstanding Alumni Award in 2002. Irv's memberships included the American Legion, VFW, Hays Medical Center volunteer, and Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course. He was a Life Member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1325. Irv prided himself for bringing windmill fast-pitch softball to Ellis County and enjoyed his many years on the mound. He also loved bowling, playing golf, crossword puzzles, and, most importantly, spending time with his family. Irv is survived by his loving wife, Marie; daughters Judy Haas and husband Mike, Patty Freed and husband Jon, Mary Beth Karlin and partner Mike McKinnon, Cindy Washburn and husband Mark, and son Terry Karlin and wife Kelli. He also leaves behind adoring grandchildren Lisa (Haas) Flynn and husband John, Eric Freed, Cassandra Tregellas, Dusty Washburn, Kaycee (Karlin) Dechant and husband Jason, Ross Karlin, and Aubree Karlin, as well as great-grandchildren Noah and Hannah Flynn. Other survivors include siblings Lauraine Kluge, Annette Schmidt, Art Karlin, and Jim Karlin. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Gerald Karlin. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. on Monday April 13th at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery with Military Honors by the Hays American Legion and VFW. Visitation will be on Sunday 5:00 P.M.- 8:00 PM. and on Monday 8:45 A.M. - 9:30A.M. all at Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays. A parish Vigil Service will be held Sunday at 6:30 followed by a combined Knights of Columbus and Daughters of Isabella Rosary Service all at the funeral chapel.
