Ig Flax

Ignatius W. "Ig" Flax, age 87, of Ellis, passed away Wednesday, December 30th at the Hays Good Samaritan Center. He was born on July 19, 1922 in Ransom, Kansas to Gotfred and Catherine (Weber) Flax. He married Martina Unrein on January 7, 1947 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in LaCrosse, Kansas. She preceded him in death on November 6, 2002. Ig was a Farmer and Stockman. He was a US Army veteran of WWII serving from 1942 - 1946. His memberships included St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Ransom VFW and the Anno Sanger American Legion Post # 209 in Franklin, NE.He is survived by two sons, Leon Flax (Maureen) of Dodge City and Leroy Flax (Janice) of WaKeeney; eight daughters, Martina Thomas (Seth) of Naponee, NE., Shirley Peintner-Strickert (Paul) of Scott City, Cecelia Werth (Neil) of Hays, Catherine Webber (Donald) of Franklin, NE., Mary Jane Knapp and Elaine Riedell of WaKeeney, Gladys Owens (Pat) of St. Francis and Corona Hoch (Eric) of Medicine Lodge; three brothers, Lawrence Flax (Betty) of Dodge City, Fr. Myron Flax of Colorado Springs and Leonard Flax (Irene) of Wright, KS.; two sisters, Helen Schuler of Ness City and Sr. Mary Ann Flax of Lexington, NE., 35 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 3 step great grandchildren and 2 step great-great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his wife, Martina, his parents, a daughter, Mildred Werth, three brothers, Paul as an infant, Eugene and Herman Flax, a sister, Rosie Flax and 2 great grandchildrenFuneral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery with military honors by the Ellis VFW.Visitation will be on Sunday 5:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. and Monday 8:45 A.M. - service time all at the church. A parish vigil service will be at 7:00 P.M. on Sunday followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary. Arrangements in care of Keithley Funeral Chapel, Ellis. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Mary's School or St. Mary's Church.
