Esther Burgardt Harris

Esther Burgardt-Harris, age 79, of Hays, passed away on Sunday, February 21st at Hays Medical Center. She was born on February 24, 1930 in Hays, Kansas to Martin and Pauline (Leiker) Degenhardt. She married Lester Burghardt on October 21, 1946. He preceded her in death on July 21, 1999.Esther was the first manager at the Maurices store in the Hays Mall for thirty plus years. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.She is survived by two sons, Lester Burgardt and wife Carol of WaKeeney and Dennis Burgardt and wife Jan of Great Bend; three daughters, LeeAnn Zielinski and husband Dave of Port St. Lucie, FL., Esther Schmidt and husband Tim of Hays and Linda Schmidt and husband Kevin of Bradenton, FL.; two brothers, FM Gervase Degenhardt of Pittsburgh, PA. And Martin Degenhardt of Gautier, MS.; three sisters, Verna Schumacher and Joyce Pfeifer of hays and Veronica Ditto of Everman, TX.; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Viola Sack and Delores Herman.Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.Visitation will be Wednesday 5:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. and Thursday 9:00 A.M. - 9:30 A.M. all at Brock's North Hill Funeral Chapel 2509 Vine, Hays. A parish vigil service will be Wednesday at 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.Contributions are suggested to the Hays Good Samaritan Center and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
