Ernest Eugene Gustason, known to his loved ones as "Ernie" and "Gus" passed away on May 14, 2024, in Hays, Kansas. He was born on November 29, 1958, in El Dorado, Kansas.

Gus led a remarkable life that was dedicated to serving his country and cherishing the moments he spent with his family and friends. After graduating from Russell High School in 1976, he immediately joined the Marine Corps and served with honor from 1976 to 1993, ultimately achieving the esteemed rank of Gunnery Sergeant. His military service included several deployments during Desert Storm, where he exhibited bravery and dedication to his fellow servicemen.

Outside of his military career, Gus was an individual of many passions and talents. He was an avid outdoorsman who found solace and joy in nature. His artistic abilities shone through in various forms, reflecting his creative spirit. Fishing was among his favorite pastimes, allowing him moments of tranquility amid the waters. His deep-rooted patriotism was evident in all aspects of his life.

Gus is survived by his mother, Vera Galliart of Russell, KS; his son Brian Gustason and daughter Preslee Gustason, both residing in Houston, TX; sisters Karla Davignon (Lynn) of Ellis, KS, Vickie Counts of Salina, KS, and Lori Meier (Terry) of Russell, KS; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father, Ernest Eugene Gustason Sr., and his step-father, Gene E. Galliart.

Ernest Eugene Gustason will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to duty, his love for his family and friends, and the lasting impact he had on all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace. 

A private ceremony with Military Honors will be held at a later date, and he will be laid to rest among his band of brothers in the State of Kansas Veterans Cemetery at WaKeeney.
