Donald Eugene Hiebsch, age 81, of Hays, Passed away Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at his home. He was born on January 28, 1928 in Edna, Kansas to Frank and Ethel (Finley) Hiebsch. He attended school through the 8th grade. He worked on Wheelin Farm where he met Thelma L. Griffin in Colby, Ks. They married Dec.10th, 1950. He was drafted in Feb. 1951. He served proudly in the army for the 38th parallel and was stationed in Korea until 1952. Once he returned he worked in a filling station in Colby. In 1958 they adopted their twin daughters Joyce and June and brought them home for his 30th birthday. They moved to Hays in 1960. Seller's Tractor Company employed Don and educated him in Diesel mechanics. He remained with the company for 39 years and retired with them. He decided to work part time for S&W supply as a parts deliveryman 4 years. Thelma and him divorced in 2000. He remained in Hays & eventually moved into Centennial Towers in 2001. He had battled diabetics for 31 years, prostate cancer since 2002, quad bi-pass surgery in 2001, retinal detachment since 2004, survived a severe car accident in 2003 and recently lost vision completely due to diabetes. He really enjoyed his family in the last 7 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers, a son in law Jerry Grumbein, and a grandson-in-law Justin Loffredi.Survivors: X-wife Thelma Hiebsch, both daughters Joyce Funk and June Grumbein, 4 grandchildren Candice Loffred; Rachel Grumbein, Brandon Funk, and Raelynn Grumbein, including 7 great grandkids Taylor and Tyra Loffedi, Evie Grumbein- Banegas, and Stuart Littrel, Trinity and Tanaya Funk, and Kayley Geaslin and a sister, Leta Jarrett from Parsons, Ks. Donations are suggested to National Diabetic Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
