Catherine Harkness

Catherine Harkness, age 81, of Hays, passed away Tuesday, April 6, at Hays Medical Center. She was born on September 15, 1928, in Emmeram, Kansas, to Raymond M. Dreiling and Melsina Dreiling. She graduated from Victoria High School in 1946. She married Robert A. Harkness on June 14, 1948, in Hays. Together they had 4 children. She was a homemaker until 1969. She worked as a bookkeeper for the ALCO store in Hays for 31 years. Catherine was a devote Catholic and was active in religious organizations. Her memberships include the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, the Sisters of St. Agnes Association, the Daughters of Isabella, the Secular Franciscan Order, Legion of Mary, Hays Medical Center Auxiliary, Red Cross, and Hospice. She was a member of St. Joseph Parish in Hays and served as a Eucharistic Minister for the Parish. She is survived by three sons, Robert B. Harkness, Salina, Charles A. Harkness and wife, Donna, Wichita, John R. Harkness, Wichita, and one daughter, Diane M. Kowal and husband, Allan, Overland Park, along with two grandchildren. The grandchildren are Megan (Kowal) Saettele, M.D., and her husband Timothy Saettele, M.D., Kansas City, MO., and Stephanie Kowal, Overland Park. She is survived by one brother, Raymond J. Dreiling and wife Ann, Wichita; and three sisters, Jeannete Pfortmiller and husband Glenn, Hays, Eileen Dreiling, Wichita, and Patricia Boswell and husband Ron, Wichita. She is also survived by sister-in-law Toni Dreiling, Wichita. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Harkness, her parents, Raymond and Melsina Dreiling, one sister, Mildred Schaible, and one brother, Bernard Dreiling. Funeral services will be at 1:00 P.M. Friday, April 9th at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hays with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery.Visitation will be Thursday 4:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. and Friday 11:00 A.M. - 12:15 P.M. all at Brock's North Hill Chapel 2509 Vine, Hays.On Thursday there will be an Associates of the Sisters of St. Agnes Memorial Service at 4:00 P.M., Adorers Rosary service at 4:30 P.M., Daughters of Isabella Rosary service at 6:00 P.M. followed by a Parish Vigil Service at 6:30 P.M. all at the funeral home.Contributions are suggested to the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel or the Sisters of St. Agnes Association, Hays, Kansas, in care of the funeral home.
