Walter W. Becker died Sunday, September 23, 2012 at Hays Medical Center at the age of 98. He was born July 6, 1914 the eldest of seven children to William "Bill" F. and Freda M. (Paulsen) Becker on the family farm in southern Rush County. The farmstead is located 12 miles north and 2 miles west of Rozel. Part of the farm consists of 160 acres that was homesteaded in 1885 by Bills father, William A. Becker.

Walter grew up on the farm helping his father with farming and caring for cattle, sheep, and horses. He attended rural school at Pleasant Point District #24 and LaCrosse High School.

On May 27, 1934 he married Charlotte Blattner and have been married for 78 years.

Walter worked for Standard oil and then the Rozel Union Cooperative. He liked working but after seven years developed health problems from grain dust and decided to move to the family farm in 1943 after his parents moved to southeast Kansas.

Walter served as a board member on the Farmers Telephone Company, LaCrosse. He later helped organize the Golden belt Telephone Association where he was a director. He was a school board member of Unified School District #496 and also served on the FSA County Committee, Hays. Walter was elected to the board of directors for Central Kansas Electric Cooperative (C.K.E.C.), Great Bend, later called Midwest Energy, Hays.

Walter was a member of the First Baptist Church in Rozel where he served as deacon and trustee. He later moved his membership to First Baptist Church in Hays.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte; two daughters, Faye Klein and husband Lyn of Hays and Joyce Becker and husband John Wade of Cape Girardeau, MO; a brother, Bob Becker of Mission, KS; two sisters, Theresa Blattner of Littleton, CO and Mary Pollock of Upland, CA; two granddaughters, Dian Organ and husband Daren of Colby and Tami Norris and husband Eric of Hays; a great grandson, Dalaan Organ and great granddaughters Hannah and Isis Norris.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Harvey, Marvin and Wesley who all served in the US Navy on the USS Arizona during the bombing at Pearl Harbor. Harvey was not on board ship at the time of the bombing but Marvin and Wesley were on board and died Dec. 7, 1941.

Services will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday at Brocks North Hill Chapel 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601. Burial will be at 3:30 PM Wednesday in the Fairmont Cemetery in Jetmore.

Visitation will be Tuesday 4 to 8 PM and Wednesday 9:30 until service time at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Good Samaritan Society, Hays or Hays First Baptist Church.
