Melven Herl

Melven Joseph Herl, age 86, of Hays, died Saturday, July 21, 2012 at Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell where he moved to from the Smoky Hill Rehabilitation Center in Salina, Kansas where he had been for nearly a year. He was born June 21, 1926 in Antonino, KS. to John J. and Caroline (Klaus) Herl. He married Esther Sauer June 2, 1947. She preceded him in death in 1999. He was the owner of Mel Herl Electric, a musician with the Mel Hall Orchestra, a partner in Herl Brothers Cars, he was involved in band promotions and a member of the musicians union, St. Josephs Catholic Church and he enjoyed gardening. He is survived by six children: Cindy J. (Herl) Brown, Independence, MO. , David M. Herl, Independence, Mo., Jacki (Herl) Bisterfeldt, Las Vegas, NV., Melissa M. (Herl) Lacey and husband David, Costa Mesa, Calif., Stephanie L. (Herl) Kramer and husband Bill, Hays,and Mark M. Herl and wife Rachel of Hays. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Barbara (Brown) Halepeska and husband Chad, Topeka, Ks., Nicole (Bisterfeldt) Rainey and husband Aaron, Las Vegas, NV., Amanda Kramer and fiance Theodore Brown , Ingalls, Ks., Sarah Kramer, Lawrence, Ks., Jason Kramer, Kansas City, Mo., Esther Lacey and Ivan Lacey, Costa Mesa, Calif.,, and Elena Herl, Hays, Ks.. Mel was blessed with four Great grandchildren: Brianna and Kiefer Halepeska, Madilynn Rainey and Quinten Brown. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lucille Koch; brothers, Alfred, Jacob, Severin, Victorinus, Edwin and Walter. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Our Lady Help of Christians Cemetery in Antonino. Visitation will be Monday 4 PM 8 PM and Tuesday 9 AM 9:30 AM at Brocks North Hill Chapel 2509 Vine Hays, KS. 67601. A rosary service will be at 6:15 PM followed by a parish vigil service at 6:30 PM Monday all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to be used according to the wishes of the family and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
