Joseph C. Karlin, age 79 of Hays, passed away Sunday, May 1st at Hays Medical Center. He was born on March 19, 1932 in Catharine, Kansas to Paul P. and Frances (Schmidt) Karlin. He graduated from Hays High in 1951. He married Thelma Staab on October 6, 1953 in St. Catherine Church.Joe was a veteran of the US Navy serving as a hospital corpsman from 1952 - 1956. He received a bachelor's degree in business from Fort Hays State University and became a Golden Anniversary Alumnus in 2009. He worked in the finance business for over thirty years and real estate for several years in Hays. He had served as president of the Hays Kiwanis club and he was a member of American Legion Post #173, St. Joseph Knights of Columbus council # 1325 and St. Joseph's Catholic Church.He is survived by his wife, Thelma of Hays; three sons, Thomas Karlin and wife Margaret of Colby, Lawrence Karlin and wife Sheila of Garden City and Paul P. Karlin and wife Darla of Hays; three daughters, Jeaninne Kaberlein and husband Bill, Coleen Shields and Susan Taylor and husband Robert all of Hays; two sisters, Frances Arnhold of Grand Junction, CO. and Mary Agnes Norwood of Leavenworth, KS. Joe is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Joseph W. Karlin; brothers, Fidelis and Paul Karlin; sisters, Celestina Meis, Freda Lang, Severina Walters and Beatrice Brungardt and a son-in-law, Kenneth VonLintel.Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hays. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery with Military Honors by the Hays VFW and American Legion members.Visitation will be 4:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. Wed. and 9:30 A.M. - service time on Thursday all at Brock's North Hill Chapel 2509 Vine Hays, KS. 67601.A St. Joseph Council Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 6:00 P.M. Wednesday followed by a parish wake service at 6:30 P.M. Wake service will be at 6:30 PM. at the funeral home.Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Joseph's Catholic Church or donor's choice.
