Alvin Dortland

Alvin Joseph Dortland, age 96 of Victoria, passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Hays Medical Center. He was born October 9, 1917 in Gorham, Kansas to Joseph and Hattie (Waudby) Dortland. He married Irene (Robben) on October 24, 1939 at The Cathedral in Kansas City, Kansas.



Alvin was a lifelong farmer and stockman. He was a member of St. Fidelis Church, St. Fidelis Council 1867 3rd degree Knights of Columbus and St. Fidelis Assembly 0305 4th degree Knights of Columbus. Alvin was an avid baseball fan and player. He played baseball in Gorham and even played when he was into his 60s. He attended the Denver Stock Show with his Registered Hereford Cattle and he loved to fish especially with his grandsons.



He is survived by his wife of nearly 75 years, Irene of Victoria; a daughter, Kathalie Hoffman and husband Tom of Hays; two grandsons, Tracy Hoffman and wife Stacey of Leawood and Troy Hoffman of Overland Park; two great grandsons, Grant and Gavin Hoffman of Leawood; two sisters, Harriet Theilen of Steamboat Springs, Colorado and Anna Sherwood of Ocala, Florida.



He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Joseph "Bob" Dortland and two brothers, Hubert and Elmer.



Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, April 26, 2014 at St. Fidelis Catholic Church in Victoria. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery in Walker, KS.



Visitation will be Friday 4 PM 8 PM at Brocks Funeral Home 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601 and Saturday 9 AM until service time at the church.



A combined 3rd and 4th degree Victoria Knights of Columbus rosary will be Friday at 6:30 PM followed by a parish vigil at 7 PM all at the funeral home.
