Dennis "Banjo" Gerstner

Dennis “Banjo” Gerstner, age 86, of Hays, Kansas passed away Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Hays Medical Center. He was born September 22, 1932, in Hays, to Joseph and Sophia (Schuetz) Gerstner. 

He graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy in 1949. After graduation, Dennis enlisted in the US Army serving in the 439th Engineering Organized Reserve Unit. He served in Korea from 1950 – 1952. After his service duty, Dennis worked as an Under Sheriff for Ellis County. He then became a Kansas State Fire Marshall serving Western Kansas until his retirement. 

Dennis was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, VFW Post 9076, where he served as commander in 2002-2003. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by 2 sisters, Mary Schmidt of Topeka, KS and Lillian Rohr of Hays; a brother, James Gerstner of Lee’s Summit, MO and a sister-in-law, Marie Gerstner of Surprise, AZ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Leroy “Satch” Gerstner, two brother-in-laws, Harold Schmidt and Julius Rohr, and a sister-in-law, Martha Gerstner.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday, November 2, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays. Burial will follow services in St. Joseph’s Cemetery with Military Honors courtesy of the Hays VFW Post 9076 Honor Guard.

Visitation will be Thursday 5 PM – 8 PM and Friday 9 AM – 9:30 AM at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

A rosary service will be Thursday at 6:45 PM followed by a parish vigil service at 7:00 Pm all at the funeral chapel.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Hays Med or St. Joseph’s Church Building Fund.
